How you can replicate Nassau Stadium’s daunting Timeframe

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, has quickly garnered fame not only for its T20 World Cup matches but also for its astonishingly rapid construction – a Modular and temporary settlement. From breaking ground in January 2024 to its scheduled completion in May 2024, the stadium exemplifies modern construction efficiency and innovation.

This marvel of engineering demonstrates how advanced technology and meticulous planning can transform ambitious architectural visions into reality in record time.

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium was designed to be a modular structure, utilizing steel and aluminum to facilitate swift, cost-effective installation.

Key features of the stadium include an array of seating options, a fan zone, and essential infrastructure for match-day operations and event presentation. With the ability to deconstruct and reassemble the modular components, modular construction ensures sustainability and adaptability.

Modular demountable systems coupled with modern methods of pre-construction and construction were employed to achieve this feat of constructing a 34,000-seat temporary stadium in just over 100 days.

Modular Aspect

The Modular Aspect of the stadium is noteworthy and has grabbed the attention worldwide. The United States are not so Cricket Savvy and yet when they decided to hold the T20 matches, they desired to construct a temporary modular stadium without compromising on safety and the space itself.

Cricket Stadiums are perceived as colossal undertakings, but modern construction techniques and pre-construction precision have significantly simplified their creation.

Building a stadium in just over 100 days is a daunting task. About 60% of the plot is dedicated to the outfield and pitch, which required transportation, installation and curation of the drop-in pitches. The pitches were brought in from Adelaide, Australia in trays with a steel frame and curated in Florida. The trays with curated pitches were then transported to New York where they were installed.

The remaining 40% involves substantial construction, primarily focusing on the steel and aluminum structure contrary to the traditional concrete structures. The steel for the stands as well as the entire facility can be precisely prefabricated with steel detailing.

Design

The most important aspect of any structure is its design. A design in architectural term is more mathematical than creative. A design was required to calculate the sub-structures and the assembly points. It must also consider the strength and safety of large crowds that will gather on the stands to view the match as well as the VIP rooms for the cricketers and other utilities that a stadium must have. Using modern pre-construction and visualization techniques, one can validate the design and pre-fabricate the modular components with precision. Modern 3D Rendering techniques provide life-like images of a facility at the design stage itself. ICC had released a visualization of the stadium in January when the actual on-site construction had yet to commence.

Steel Structure

For the Modular Stadium the use of innovative steel structure was critical. Specifically, a modular steel building connection with an intermediate plug-in device and a beam-to-beam bolt system was used for both horizontal and vertical connections. This design ensured convenient installation and eliminated the need for on-site welding.

Next, the connections between these modules, particularly beam to beam bolted connections were essential for load transfer and structure integrity. For maintaining integrity and robustness of Modular buildings, the steel brackets are crucial typically for internal forces.

All these had to be done with accuracy as apparently, any error in this process will lead to loss of material and most importantly, time, which was a crucial factor in this project.

This can be easily accomplished with advanced steel detailing techniques. Software like Tekla ensures that every detail about the joists to optimize weight, connection type, bracket connections, and prefabricated room sized volumetric units as well as the costing and the placement is provided in the documentation.

“Structural Engineers at Tesla are proficient in developing these steel structures. The .nc file type created from Tekla can be fed directly to the CNC machine to cut the steel bars according to a particular sections. The steel bars cutting so done has the precision of 0.5 micro-meters which is very important.”

Once, the pre-fabricated steel is transported to the site, it is erected as per the drawings created through steel detailing. This is just like what a kid might do with the Lego blocks.

Based on the construction activity, the entire stadium can roughly be classified into 3 zones: the stands, enclosed area (such as rooms, etc.), and the ground (including the pitch and outfield).

Stands

The stands at the Nassau Stadium were remodelled and used for the audience. These stands originally belong to the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Utilizing steel detailing for the structure, Revit family creation for replication of seats are some of the ways through which higher efficiency can be achieved with precision.

Pitch

The Pitch is the most important part of the stadium and consist of 60% of the space. In general, cricket pitches are typically covered with a variety of grasses that are well-suited to the local climate and conditions. These grasses are often chosen for their ability to withstand wear and tear, provide good bounce and pace, and maintain a consistent surface throughout the match.

The cold weather of New York was the biggest challenge to grow grass for the pitch in specified time frame of three months. The requirements was of 10 trays of grass out of which 6 were imported from Adelaide while rest were grown locally. The warmer climate of Florida was chosen to grow Bermuda grass suitable for the pitch. The challenge here lied in transporting this grass to New York.

The rapid and efficient construction of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium underscores the importance of advanced preconstruction techniques and technologies. From BIM modeling, steel detailing to Revit Family, these tools and methodologies play a crucial role in modern construction projects. The whole Structure was dismantled later.
