Purpose of using clash detection using Navisworks

“Clash detection” is not a very new term in the virtual construction industry. It is a technology that has set the entire construction industry on fire. This term has changed the flow of construction process and certainly backed the building construction by tracking construction hazards, detecting interference’s or anticipating potential delays owing to re-designing or any other issues arising in the virtual construction modeling stage. Interference checks allow the contractors, builders and the Architects / Engineers to have a visual picture and data report for complete resolution of the clashes overall.

Clash detection can be done using Revit and Navisworks both, however Navisworks is more commonly used to check interference’s and collisions. This software also enables the BIM technician or the Designer to extract a comprehensive clash detection report to check it’s collision within Architectural, Structural and MEP disciplines. Apart from just identifying conflicts, navisworks aids in resolving these conflicts.

• Check the input drawings, point cloud or 3D geometry along with the completed model
• Review collisions in context with geometry in the model with multiple other disciplines
• Ensure that the interference’s are marked up so that the technicians can identify them easily within a particular model
• Move between clash results to maintain orientation in the model.
• One can also create a simulation and time line video by linking these reports to the 3d geometry

Let us understand Navisworks in a nutshell. This software primarily works in the back end to collaborate models, detect collisions between multiple construction disciplines and create time line simulations or animations. The 4D schedules that are developed ultimately links the building model and the construction time line, which helps the contractors to plan construction. One of the key advantages that this software holds is that the results delivered is visually impact and can be easily interpreted by contractors, end clients, Design Engineers etc. without any major hassles.

Many BIM companies today rely on visual construction software like Revit, Navisworks etc. for accurate construction planning, 3D BIM Co-ordination, Design collaboration and construction. Utilizing these software not only increases the efficiency but also speeds up the actual construction process and reduces the cost to some extent. Virtual construction has already taken place before the actual construction, collisions are detected and resolved hence it gets simpler to perform the actual construction.

What type of clashes can be detected using Navisworks?
Navisworks is a tool which is primarily used to report and resolve clashes using multiple tools within the software. One such tool is Clash Detective tool that helps in identifying the collisions and report them in a typical format. The most common feature that strikes the user in this toll is that it decreases the risk of manual errors during BIM audits.

You can conduct collision checks between 3D model and CAD Drawings, Scan to BIM is also a type of service that is rampantly used these days. One can also perform clash detection between laser scan or point clouds with the model. We can also check clashes between moving objects and still model.

Navisworks enables in checking interferences between the static and dynamic objects while working on it. We can create multiple work groups to identify collisions between different disciplines
We can link the time liner tool and 3D model to get complete construction schedule for the entire building structure
Tools like clash Detective, time Liner, and object Animation etc. Helps in identifying the animated time line schedule.

Clash detective tool has its own way of working. This tool helps in extracting reports that derived from the clash test. If you have a common set of clash tests that you reuse on multiple projects, you can turn them into a custom clash test. This set can then be installed as a custom clash test, which can later be selected and run directly from the Select Tab.

To conclude, Revit and Navisworks as a software have contributed greatly towards the evolution of clash detection services and a seamless construction process.
